Can acupuncture be used alongside IVF?

As a fertility acupuncturist, I often get asked whether acupuncture can be used alongside IVF treatments. The short answer is yes! Acupuncture has been shown to offer several benefits that can support you through your IVF journey.

Undergoing assisted fertility treatment can be a stressful, emotionally draining experience. Many patients are eager to find ways to optimize their chances of success. That's where acupuncture can help. By stimulating specific points on your body with tiny needles, acupuncture can help alleviate some of the side effects of the drugs you'll be taking, increase blood flow to your ovaries, improve the quality of your eggs, reduce stress and anxiety, and support the development of a healthy pregnancy.

It is highly recommended to begin acupuncture 2-3 months prior to assisted fertility treatment for the best outcomes.

Here's a step-by-step guide to how acupuncture can support you through your IVF treatment, along with some research-backed evidence to back up each step:

STEP ONE: SUPPRESSING YOUR NATURAL MONTHLY CYCLE

At the beginning of your IVF treatment, you'll be given medication to suppress your monthly cycle. This medication can cause a range of side effects, including hot flashes, excessive thirst, sweating, anxiety, irritability, and disturbed sleep. Acupuncture has been shown to help alleviate these side effects and improve your overall well-being. One study found that women who received acupuncture alongside their IVF treatment experienced a significant reduction in anxiety and an improvement in overall quality of life compared to those who didn't receive acupuncture (1).

STEP TWO: BOOSTING YOUR EGG SUPPLY

Once your natural cycle has been suppressed, you'll begin taking medication to stimulate your ovaries to produce more eggs. Acupuncture can help improve blood flow to your ovaries and endometrium, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to your follicles and improving the quality of your eggs. One study found that women who received acupuncture alongside their IVF treatment had higher rates of pregnancy and live birth compared to those who didn't receive acupuncture (2).

STEP THREE: CHECKING IN

During this stage, your fertility doctor will monitor your progress with regular scans and blood tests. Acupuncture can help support hormone balance and overall health during this time. One study found that women who received acupuncture alongside their IVF treatment had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol and higher levels of the hormone estradiol, which is important for follicle development (3).

STEP FOUR: EGG COLLECTION AND FERTILIZATION

When it's time for egg collection, acupuncture can help reduce anxiety and stress and support your body's natural healing process. One study found that women who received acupuncture before and after egg collection had higher rates of pregnancy and live birth compared to those who didn't receive acupuncture (4). Acupuncture can also help improve sperm quality and quantity, so if you have a partner, it's worth considering having him receive acupuncture treatments as well (5).

STEP FIVE: EMBRYO TRANSFER

Acupuncture can help improve blood flow to your uterus and support implantation during embryo transfer. Research suggests that receiving acupuncture before and after embryo transfer may improve pregnancy rates (6).

STEP SIX: POST-TRANSFER

After your embryo transfer, it's important to relax and take it easy. Acupuncture can help reduce stress and support your body's natural healing process during this time. One study found that women who received acupuncture after embryo transfer had higher rates of pregnancy and live birth compared to those who didn't receive acupuncture (7).

Acupuncture can be a valuable addition to your IVF treatment. By supporting your body and mind during this challenging time, acupuncture can help improve your chances of success and make the process more manageable. If you're considering acupuncture alongside your IVF treatment, be sure to work with a licensed and experienced fertility acupuncturist.
